SUMNER REGATTA.
About three thousand people attended the animal Simmer liegatta and Fete yesterday. The officials were prompt and punctual, and the varied programme was curried through without a hitch. Mr A. M. Husey was a thoroughly efficient secretary and treasurer. A strong ebb tide and squally south-west wind made matters somewhat awkward for the mosquito fleet, and the rowing boats had a tough upstream pull to get to the starting point. The Sailing Race (rating) tvi\s won easily by Mr Kennett's Watenvitcb, while Mr A. L. Smith's new boat Parera opened her career handsomely by winning the Handicap Race. In the Ladies' Double Sculls the Misses Anderson and Sinclair gave a fine exhibition of finished rowing. The Misses Day and Budden, while on their way to the start, got rather too near the rip on the north shore for safety, and those who were watching them felt considerably relieved when the course of the boat vas altered. Considerable interest was taken in the walking match by school teams, and although the competitors had not undergone much training the performance was a creditable one. The donkey race produced an exciting finish. A Suinner light-weight was apparently winning by several lengths, when his steed, refusing to face the tape, turned in among the crowd. Most of the ot^er donkeys also stopped within a yard or two of the line, and the race was won by an apparently hopelessly distanced outsider. The spectators derived great amusement from the antics of a Darktown crew. The Woolston Brass Band played selections throughout the afternoon. The children's races and sports were under the management of an energetic sub-com-mittee. The following are the results : — SAILING RACE, Eating-MVaterwirch <R. Kennettl. per, 1 ; WaterliK (G.
