New Zealand Natives' Association.—A meeting of the Christchurch centre ©f the New Zealand Natives' Association was held last evening in Misa Carr's roomB; present— Messrs W. Recce (president), H. J. Beswick, W. E. Thompson, F. H. Cowper (honorary secretary), E. M.Carr, T. Clarkson and the Rev C. Fraer. Four new members were elected. The Secretary reported that eighty-four members had now joined the Association, and it was anticipated that the roll would number one hundred before next meeting. After some discussion it was decided to hold a public gathering about the middle of April, when proper steps would be taken to place the objects of the Association prominently before the public and make a commencement with the work it proposed undertaking. A sub-committee was appointed to make preliminary arrangements for an inaugural entertainment, and to report at a future meeting. Correspondence was read from Timaru with reference to the proposed establishment of a branch there.

Kaiapoi. — On Wednesday evening, in the Oddfellows' Hall, :ui entertainment was given by a Christy Miusfcrel Troupe, maid of the Kaiapoi Oa.dets fund. There was a fair attendance. It was resolved to pass a vote of thanks to those who so kindly took the place of the firemen when they were absent from Sumuer during the competition held in Auckland. , A Congratui^tion from the^Bench'S* At the hearing of the Police Court i&ses this morning, Mr Beetha'th, S.M., congratulated Constable Catisilis on the succinct, orderly aud thorough style in which he had given his .evidence. Mr Beetham wished that all constables would give their evidence in a like manner. Personal. —Mr T. Morrison, of the Hawhe's Bay Herald, and Chairman, of the Parliamentary ''Press Gallery, who 'baa been staying in Christchurch, left for the south by the express this morning. Mrs B. T. Robinson and Messrs C. Read and A. Millar left for Ashburt m to-day, to sing at the St Patrick's Day concert there this evening. •>' . ■. -, - • •," , An Abbest in Wellington. — When Detective Fitzgerald was in Wellington giving evidence in the Maori conspiracy case, he found time to arrest a man who had been wanted for alleged forgery and like offences since Oct. 2, 1897. Ihere are in all ten charges against the accused, and all these are for offences alleged to have been committed at Christchurch. Detective Fitzgerald arrived with his prisoner this morning by the Eotomahana. The accused was brought up at the Police Court and remanded until March 23. Dbapebs' Hockey Club.— The second annual meeting of the Christohnrch Drapers' Hockey Club was held last evening at the Young Men's Christian Asaocia- : tion .rooms, when the .following, officers -were elected ' for the ensuing year: — President, Mr E. The report ' and balance - sheet were received and adopted, and the following office-bearers were elected for the ensuing year: — President, Mrs G. A. M. Buckley; vice-presidents, Mesdames Bullock, M'Lean and Thomas; committee, Mesdames Mac Lean Dun, Denshire, Cuthbertsbn, Gates, Makeig, Mitchell and Miss Field; honorary secretary :• and treasurer, Miss Field ; librarian, Miss Hamilton ; .conductor, Mr Owen. Several new members were enrolled, and the financial position was reported to be satisfactory. Trinity Congregational Church. — A public meeting in connection with this church was held last evening in the Trinity Congregational schoolroom. The Eev S. J. Baker presided, and there was a large attendance. The Secretary's^report showed that ten members had been received during ■ the year. Eeference was made to the flourishing condition of the Sunday school and other organisations of the church, and also to the work done by Miss A. Harband, 8.A., and Miss B. Harband, her sister, in the mission field in India. The year's total receipts from all sources had been .£697 18s Id. During the evening speeches were delivered by the Rev I. Sarginson and Messrs Parker, Fraser, Franklin and Anthony, and the programme was interspersed with anthems and other music. Prior to the meeting a soiree wa3 held, and wa3 attended by a large number of peopleLecture. — A lecture was given by Mrs Harris ("Jenny Wren") in the Women's Christian Temperance Union rooms last evening, «P on "Women's Work and Influence — Pas fc » Present and Future." Mrs Harris spoke briefly of the necessity that woman should realise more and more fully her responsibility in all relations of life towards mankind. After dwelling upon the condition of women in olden times, and mentioning the Biblical heroines she compared the privileges and "nghts," which the women of the present day possess as compared with the disabilities of their predecessors The lecturer said that the future would be largely what woman made it, and woman could now truTyfeel that "the hand that rocks the Se rules the world." Woman's true, Sgdom was not in the political arena, but in the moral, spiritual and home life of the world. Mrs Harris was listened to attentively, and at the close of i che lec ture ■was accorded a hearty vote of thanks.
