OBITUARY.

MR BERRY CASS. A private cable message was received at this office yesterday to the effect that Mr Berry Cass, for some years well known in Christchurch, has died at Bunbury, West Australia, on Sunday. Mr Cass came to Canterbury in the sixties, and shortly afterwards bought the Cash el House drapery establishment (where the D.I.C. now stands) from Messrs Stringer and Shackleton. Here he carried on business for some time, and afterwards he purchased from Mr J. White the business in Market Square at present owned by Mr T. Armstrong. About eight or nine years ago he left for Auckland, and after remaining there for a short time he proceeded to Australia, where he remained up to the time of his death. He took considerable interest in municipal politics while in Christchurch, and about 1878 was elected a member of the City Council. / In 1880, however, when the ward system was adopted, all the councillors had to retire, and he was not' elected a member of what was generally known at the time as the "Reform" Council. Mr Cass held somewhat .peculiar views as to the shape of the earth, contending that it was" flat, and he delivered several lectures in support of his theory. He was a constant contributor to the newspapers on various questions. At the time of his death henvas j close upon eighty years of age.

A private cablegram was received from Melbourne yesterday announcing the death of Mr C. C. Murray, who was for some years manager of the Napier branch of Messrs Murray^ Roberts and Co., and a well-known sporting man.
