NEW ZEALAND DEFENCE.
FIELD BATTERIES. THE VOLUNTEER FORCE. [Per Press Association.! WELLINGTON, March 14. The Government has decided to establish a field battery for service where needed, with its headquarters probably in Wellington. New guns and equipments of the most modern pattern will be provided. v The volunteer force is to be increased and the regulations altered in the direction of increasing the number of parades. [From Our Correspondent.] The decision of the Cabinet respecting additional field batteries is understood to apply at present only to the Wellington district, bub will be extended to other districts on the advice of the commandant. It will be of interest to horse breeders to know that a ;fully equipped field battery requires at least 120 horses. Should it be decided to equip many of these batteries, there will consequently be a brisk demand for horses. As to the volunteer force, it is understood that it will be increased sufficiently to man the forts. Any other additions will be made on the commandant's recommendation. There is no intention to increase the capitation.
