PICNICS.

The employes of Messrs Bowron Bros, and their friends held a picnic on Saturday last at Little River. About 700 persons left Woolston by a special train afc 7.50 a.m. and returned at. B p.m. A very enjoyable day was spent in sports and games. Trophies and donations were presented by Messrs Kempthorne, .Prosser and Co., E Reece and Sons, J. T. Brown and Son, D. H. Brown and Sons, Maine Bros., H. Berry and Co., Scott 8r05..; J. H. Hopkins and Co., M'Clatchie and Co. and Mr Deamer. J. Milne won tbe Tannery Handicap of 100yds, 220yds and 440yds ; T. Woodham, tbe race for boys under eighteen years of nge; W. Prisk the married men's race; G. Hopping tbe single men's handicap; T. Corlet the mile walk ; J. Cai-inichael the high jump ; and F. Wadman the hop-step-trad-jump. The D.I.C. employes held a picnic in the Kaiapoi Domain yesterday afternoon. After a pleasant day the party left Kaiapoi at 6.30 p.m. on the homeward trip. ; The Waimate -school bad an excursion by t_ain to Timaru yesterday, and pretty well filled twelve cars of the train. The day was fine, and varied arrangements were made for the pleasure' and instruction of the pupils, one of the first and most useful being an inspection of the woollen mills. The annual picnic in connection with tbe Girls' High School was held yesterday morning, when one hundred and ten pupils and others journeyed to Lyttelton j by train.
