India has hundreds of dialects, which may be classed under three great heads, the Sanscrit, Pracrit, and Magadhi. The Sanscrit is the fundamental language and that of the Vedas ; the Pracrit, the vernacular language in many dialects ; and the Magadhi or Missa is that of Ceylon and the islands. .
