TYPHOID IN TIMARU.
A correspondent of the Timafti Herald the other day alleged that owing to the Borough Council's neglect to enforce sanitary laws, there had befen "no fewer than thirty deaths registered in the town within this last fortnight from typhoid fevpr, and at the present moment the hospital authorities, are at their wits' ends to know what to do to meet the requirements of this fever-stricken town." Commenting on this letter, the Herald says :— "The writer has been misinformed as to the amount of the death penalty imposed upon the town ; but that is a detail. The real amount is far too great. We can add to the argument it supplies from another direction. Wo have* it on very good authority indeed that the excursion from Ashburton on Thursday was reduced in numbers by the evil reputation Timaru has gained in respect of typhoid? that school committees and parents were soared by it, and the consequence was that the majority of the school children were not allowed to come. We have direot personal testimony that this evil reputation has spread as far as Fairlie, and had some influence upon passengers by Saturday's tram." «
