SWIMMING,
The following are the results of the Richmond Amateur Swimming Club's January Handicap, 50yds, decided yesterday afternoon. Mr C. O'Connor acted a3 starter, Mr D. Barns as timekeeper, and Messrs R. J. Paull (vice-president) and A. | B. "Wilson as judges : — First heat : C. Low, 4sec, 1 ; J. E. Allen, ss*c, 2. A. B. Truscott scr also started. Time— 36?sec. Second heat: R. C. Attiuson, 6}sec, 1;" W. J. Byrne, ssec, 2. J. Noi-they sieec and A. Locke 6Asec also started. Time— 4osec. Third heat : P. L. Byrne, Bsec, 1 ; C. Craddock, 9sec, 2. These were the only starters, 'time— 4i)Jsec. Fourth heat: J. Petrie. 9sec. 1 ; W. Simpson, 6Jsco, i. F. M. Paull 9?ec nlsi> started. Time— 4l' sEec.5 Eec. Fifth heat : W. H. Cooko, O^sic. 1 j T. Strange Ssc, who arrived late, swam over in 3tj{sec, wbidi entitled him to a place in the final heat. F nil heat : This was a very exciting race, aud resulted— W. H. Cooke, 1; P. L. Byrne, '1; C. Low, 3. W. G. Stranpe ssec, B. C. Atkinson 6Jsec and J. Petrus Ssec also started. Won by a foot, second place secured on the touch. Tinie^ — 41^soc. After the final of the Richmond Club's January Handicap Eace last evening, Sergeant Loates, of H.M.S. Mildura, who v/as present with, several of the crew, gave, a first-class exhibition of fancy swimming. Some of his feats, notably his floating performances, were quite new to the spectators, who heartily applauded them.' Sergeant Loates is a medallist of the Life Sa,ving Society, and a qualified examiner under its rules. Messrs W. Van der Velden, plunge champion of New Zealand, aud E. Thomas, long dive champion, were also present, and gave a very interesting exhibition of plunging, which was much admired. A meeting of the committee of the Sydenham Amateur Swimming Club was held on Thursday evening; presentMessrs C. Kent (chairman), W. A . Howison, E. Grover, A. E. Denham, W. Eetts. A. H. Cooper, TV. Woodward, and A. M. Russell. A trophy was received from Mr TV. White, of the Electro-plating Company. Final arrangements were made for the club's annual races, which promise to be very successful. A large number of entries are expected for the 50yds Inter-Club Handicap. They close on Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Clarendon Hotel.
