POETRY.

LINES W&ITTBK ON BeCEIPT OF A LETTEK. Behold a proof that fondest protestations ' Are frail, and changoful as the fleeting day, That strenuous love has strongest aberrations ' And by its own quintessence wilts away. Some hearts theie are of constancy unbending . On whom detraction's powers may not avail, Wnoae-iove is boundless, fathomless, unendingHearts that hold fast though fiends' harsh hate assail. i But most, alas! are mirrors-of a se&SDn, Eefleoting passions in alike degree ; And separation ever augurs treason, Though -present love betardent, full and free. The envious whisper born of base detraction Grows clarion-tongued to hearts to doubt attuned: jll-balaneedfaifcli procures its own refraction • Where trusting hearcs by courage were relumed. Grieve not! such fragile love, so fluctuating, .Unworthy is that man should Jteat upon ; , The heart 'tween trust and doubting vacillating Is better lost than won.
