IRRIGATION.

At a meeting held at Kuapuna on Wednesday night it was resolved that it was desirable that the Ashburton County Council should be requested to raise a loan of £5000 for the purpose of bringing in a permanent supply of water, from the Eangitata, for an area of about 15,000 acres, as shown on the _ plan prepared by the County Engmeer. At Hinds on Thursday evening there was a meeting of settlers interested in the question of irrigation for the Lower Ashburton district. About thirty settlers were present, and Mr E. G. Wright, M.H.R., chairman of the Ashburton County Council, presided. The boundaries of the land to be irrigated, as proposed by Mr Baxter, ■were ..-^Western, Eangitata River ; eastern and southern, Hinds River, from Hackthorne Road to north-east corner of Reserve 11 OS, thence along Lowcliffe Road •and Coldstreani Road to the south-west corner ot Reserve 2012, along the terrace to trig-pole 67a at Eangitata River; northern, Cracroft-Hackthorne Road, between Rangitata and Hinds Rivers. This scheme comprises about Bp,ooo acres, and the quantity of water to be brought down would irrigate the whole area to a depth of ten inches and a half annually. It was resolved that the scheme should be extended to embrace all that portion of the Coldstream district included in No. 5 division of Mr Baxter's irrigation map.
