♦ INTENSE HEAT IN ADELAIDE. GREAT MORTALITY. United Press Association— By Electric Telegraph— Cnpyri^ht. Deceived Dec. 30, 10 p.m. ADELAIDE, Dec. 30. The weather continues hot. For five consecutive days the thermometer has been over 100. A number of infants, children and old people have succumbed to its effects. Animals are suffering severely, and poultry are dying on all hands. The Director of the Zoological Grounds states that he never saw animals so affected. . Several valuable exhibits died to-day, and the majority were only kept alive by hosing them with cold water. Keceived Dec. 30, 10.55 p.m. MELBOURNE, Dec. 30. The thermometer reached 109deg. There were several cases of heat apoplexy in the streets. Beceived Dec. 35, 9.25 n.m. MELBOURNE, Dec. 31. Numerous cases of sunstroke and deaths from heat apoplexy are reported from the country. BRISBANE, Dec. 31. The drought, which has prevailed in the northern and western districts for the last two years, has been broken up. Good rains are falling.
