Personal. — His Honor Mr Justice Denniston was a passenger for Timaru by the express to-day. Horse Protection Society. — A meeting of the committee of the Horse Protection Society was hold at the City Council Chambers at noon to-day. The proceedings were private. Ctclino. — Messrs A. TR. Barker and Gr. Sutherland, of the Christchurch Cycling Club, left by to-day's express for Dunedin, where they will compete in the Caledonian Society's sports on New year's Day. Welcome Meeting. — A public welcome meeting ta Key _?. W. Isitt will be held in the Oddfellows' Hall this evening, when addresses will be delivered by Mr T. E. Taylor, M.H.E., and others. The Oddfellows' Hall. — Tlie Loyal City of Christchurch Lodge, 1.0.0. F., M.U., has sold the Oddfellows' Chambers to Messrs D. Benjamin and Co., and has ■decided to enlarge the Oddfellows' Hall by constructing an overhead room. Volunteer Cricket Match. — The officers of the Christchurch. Garrison Corps have invited their non-coms, to a friendly trial of skill at cricket. The challenge has been accepted, and the date fixed for Jan. 3, at the Christ's College grounds. The Imperial Eifles. — The Kaiapoi Woollen Company has arranged to deliver the uniforms of the' new infantry company," the Imperial Eifles, by Jan. 10. The members of the corps have already attained a most creditable degree of proficiency, considering the short time that has elapsed since they were enrolled. The Military Tournament. — The Dunedin visitors expressed their satisfaction with the management of the tournament held at the drillshed on Boxing Night, and intend holding a similar series of contests at Tahuna Park during the Dnnedin Carnival Week in March, at which teams from Canterbury corps will find themselves heartily welcome. New Brighton. — At a public meeting held at New Brighton last night, it was decided to hold a gala on the beach on Thursday, lan. 27. The following officers were elected : — Chairman, Mr. H. D. Pine ; treasurer, Mr Bachelor ; secretary, Mr A . W. Owles ; the committee to consist of the foregoing and Messrs G. Slater and A. E. Nicholls. The meeting was adjourned to ' Wednesday next. Public Meeting at Kaiapoi. — A public meeting was held in the Fire Brigade Chamber laat evening, to consider the advisability of holding aquatic sports and a regatta. There was a good attendance, and in the absence of the Mayor throngh indisposition, Mr Moore, M.H.R., was voted to the chair. It was unanimously resolved that aquatic sports and a regatta •be held, that the balance from last regatta be handed over to the committee now to be appointed, and that all present be a committee to carry out the sports on a day to be named at a future meeting. The following were elected aB officers, viz. : Patron, Mr R. Moore, M.H.E. ; commodore, the Mayor; judges, Messrs Caverhill and J. Simpson. Starters to be appointed at the next meeting. A canvassing committee was also appointed and a committee to draw up a programme and present it at a general meeting to be held in the same place next Tuesday evening. A vote of thanks to the chairman concluded a most enthusiastic meeting. Personal. — Mr A. R. Bloxam, registrar of the Supreme Court, will leave by the s.s. Botomahana on Saturday for Wellington, whence he will sail for England by the s.s. Gothic, on his leave of absence. Catholic Picnic. — The Catholics of Christchurch intend holding an excursion to Bligh's Gardens, New Brighton, on New Year's Day. The Christchurch Professional Band has been engaged for the day. A cricket match has been arranged with New Erighton, and races for children and adults will be run during the day. New Zealand Natives' Association. — A meeting of the committee of the Christchurch centre of the New Zealand Natives' Association was held last evening in Miss Carr's schoolroom ; present — Messrs W. Eeece (president), W. Poison, E. M. Carr, T. Clarkson, G. Capper, A; G. Henderson, F. Cowper (honorary secretary) and the Key C. A. Fraer. The Secretary stated that membership cards had been princed and were now ready for distribution. Mr Poison and the Secretary were empowered to make inquiries regarding suitable rooms for the Association's meetings. The Eev C. A. Fraer and Mr Eeece were elected to report upon designs for a membership badge, and Messrs Capper and Poison to draw up a circular setting forth the objects of the Association. A Handsome Model. — The New Zealand Shipping Company have now on view in their office a very handsome model of their new cargo steamer Eakaia. It is fully nine feet long, and accurately shows the starboard side of the vessel, together with the deck fittings, officers' and passengers' quarters. The steamer, it will be remembered, was built in 1895 by E. Hawthorne, Leslie and Co., Newcastle-on-Tyne, to the order of the New Zealand Shipping Company, aud carries refrigerating machinery capable of accommodating 90,000 carcases, besides having first class accommodation for passengers. She has three triple expansion engines, with a length of stroke of 54in, and her measurements are : —Length 420 ft, beam 54ft, and depth 28ft 7in. The Eakaia has a gross tonnage of 5628 tons.
