THE ERUPTION ON THE WEST COAST.

Several months ago a report -was published that a volcanic eruption had occurred on or about Monnt Tutoko, near Martin's Bay, the information being given by the officers of a steamer that happened to bo in the vicinity. The Otago Daily Times has received a letter from a resident of Martin's Bay, which corroborates the report of the steamer's company. At the Bay there was an earthquake and heavy rain. Next morning the water barrels and other things that had caught rain water, were found to have a sort of red ashes aiso in them. A day or two later the steamer called, and the mate asked if they had felt the earthquake ashore, but said nothing about an eruption. The people ashore at the time accounted for the ashes by supposing that a meteor had dissolved in the air at the time, until, some months after, they got papers with the report of an eruption of Tutoko.
