CANTERBURY WOMEN'S INSTITUTE.

[ A general meeting of the Canterbury Women's Institute was held on Friday evening in the Women's Christian Temperance Union rooms, Gloucester Street. Correspondence was -received from the Premier, the Hoti Major Steward, Mr Mills, M.H.R., cud Dr Syines. The Inebriates' Institution- Bill was reported upon and considered, arid the following resolution, to be forwarded to Mr Joyce, was unanimously passed :—•'• The Canterbury Women's Institute,, while heartily .approving of the principle of the Inebriates' Institution Bill, feels that it does not iipjlicate., clearly that satisfactory provision wilEbe made for the so-called vagrant class ofpporandolddrunkards.whospeciallyneed such homes." The following resolution, to bo forwarded to Messrs G. J. Smith and T. E. A resolution to the effect that "as fourteen public bodies were represented at the Local Government Conference lately held in Christchurch, and unanimously approved of the principles embodied in Mr Tanner's Bill, Mr C. M. Gray's motion at a recent meeting of the Christchurch City Council was ill-advised," was also unanimously adopted. The notice of motion dealing with the discrepancies between the salaries of male and female teachers was held over, pending communication with the Teachers' Institute. It was arranged to hold the adjourned meeting of the Institute on Monday afternoon, at the Metaphysical Club-room, Hobbs's Buildings, to deal with the subject lately brought before it by the representatives of the Christchurch Medical Society. Two members read papers on the snbject of "The Economic Equality of Husband and Wife," and further discussion was held over owing to the lateness of the hour. One new member was elected.
