VICTORIA v. SOUTH AUSTR^t-IA. j [Per Pp.ess Association.! ADELAIDE, Feb. 27. In the match Victoria v. South Australia the former in the first innings lost e'ght ■wickets for 277 runs (C. M'Leod 48, Trotfc 61, Giller 42). The fielding was poor. 1 OTAGO V. CANTERBURY. THIRD DAY. The game was resumed this morning at 11.10. The wicket promised well, and the weather, althongh gloomy, was warm and fine. With 193 up for five wickets, Clark notout 15 and LigginsnotoutSresumed batting to the bowling of. Malone and Wilding. Runs came freely, and 200 was soon posted, principally through Clarke's efforts. The latter batsman's work had 210 in sight before long, but at 217 Wilding smartly held a hot return from Clark— 2l7— 6— 29. Rattray joined Liggins, and 200 was soon noted. The bowling, though, continued steady and the fielding good. As a consequence run-getting became difficult. Liggins had another let off at North's hands, but at 227 Sims snapped up Rattray in the slips, and the captain retired in favour of Spraggon, who at once witnessed Liggins hit Malone finely to tho boundary; 230 up. Spraggon started vigorously, but North distinguished himself by missing another catch, and then took up bowling instead of Malone at 239, and at 243 North ended Liggins's innings of an hour and a half — 243 — 8 — 21. Hope was the next batsman, but Wilding soon bowled him— 249^—9— 2. Haydon— last man-^eame in and Spraggon put up 250 at once, followed soon afterwards by 260. Spraggon hit out lustily, being particularly partial to Wilding, and 270 coon . appeared. Spraggon's hitting continued very briskly, and runs came at an alarming rate. At 279 Stephenson took North's place at the bowling crease, the latter going on at the other end instead of Wilding, but the changes made no difference to Spraggon, who was playing with great dash and vigour, Haydon going along confidently and well. At 290 Malone bowled once more, and North held a catch from Haydon, the last wicket having added 41 runs. Spraggon took in his bat for a brilliantly played innings of 40, the innings closing just on 1 p.m. At 1.15 p.m. Wheatley and De Maus set to work to knock off the 193 runs required to win. Downes and Hope opened the bowling. Both batsmen opened cautiously and held the fort until 1.30 p.m., when the luncheon adjournment was announced. The following are the scores : — OTAGO.
