FATAL ACCIDENT AT CHEVIOT.

[From Our Correspondent. I CHEVIOT, Jan. 22. A fearful accident occurred . about 5.30 p.m. on Thursday, on the Port RobinsonHurunui Road, whereby Ernest Phillips, I a young man about thirty years old, lost his life. It appears from Avhat can be learned that two teams left Port fully loaded — a waggon.* and eight horses driven by a man named Hammond, and a dray driven by the deceased. They had gone some miles when deceased exchanged the dray for the waggon. After passing ' Terry's, where there is a narrow turning, the leaders running rather close to the edge, the wheels dropped off. the road, and '. before they could be righted tlie whole fell into the gully below. The waggon was loaded with wire netting, &c. On the second* man reaching the scene he found Phillips under the load. Phillips spoke saying "I am jammed." Hammond sent a boy for assistance, and in the meantime the waggon again shifted. When the stuff was removed Phillips was dead. A medical examination revealed that his neck was broken, probably after the last .movement of the waggon. Deceased was well respected, and an obliging and courteous young fellow. An inquest will be held this afternoon.
