THE LICENSING POLL.

* THE KAIAPOI PETITION. A WITHDRAWAL. At the Kaiapoi Magistrate's Court this morning, Mr Bishop, S.M., presiding, Mr J. A. Flesher asked permission to withdraw the petition of fifty electors for an inquiry relative to the local option poll. Mr Flesher, who appeared on behalf of the petitioners, said that owing to the action of one of the daily papers in publishing the names of the petitioners, much harm and mischief had been caused, and even threats had been i_sed towards some of the persons who had, under a wrong idea, signed their names, their desire being simply to obtain a recount of the votes. His Worship said that he must accede to the request, but the petitioners would have to pay certain expenses, and Mr Flesher undertook that this should be done. A number of licensees and others were present, watching the proceedings with considerable interest.
