SHIPMASTERS' ASSOCIATION.
Wellington, Oct. 19. At the annual meeting of the Shipmasters' Association to-day, Mr Duthie congratulated the Association on its excellent position, the accumulated funds now amounting to over i>9oo, and expressed regret that so many shipmasteis on-the coast still hold aloof from the Association, pointing out how desirable it was that all captain's of vessels should, in their own interests, become members of a body which had already done much good. He trusted that the work of erecting the Cape Palliser lighthouse would be pushed on with all speed. His opinion was that the Shipping and Seamen Amendment; Act of the past session would not be found an oppressive measure. A short discussion took place with reference to the "rule of the road." Captain Wheeler considered $that the matter should be placed in a more satisfactory position than at present. It was agreed, that tie executive should take some steps. Captain Manning expressed the liope that the Association would not lose sight of the fact that it was desirably, that - the beacon on Jackson's Head should be * made more conspicuous. The ..P resident • said he felt sure that the new Minister of Marine would recognise the importance of doing the work suggested.
