COUNTRY NEWS.

Bukwood. — The fortnightly meeting of the Burwood Band of Hope was held on Friday evening in the schoolroom. Mr De La Cour presided. A programme, consisting of recitations, songs, &c, was carried out by Misses Judd, C. Bone, N. De La Cour, M. White, Lonora Spencer, P. Palmer, and Mr Grant. An address was given by Mrs Spencer. Two signed the pledge. Cust.— The Institute Hall was well filled on Wednesday evening, when a prohibition ' meeting was held under the auspices of the Kaiapoi Electorate League. The Eev D. ' D. Eodger presided, and apologised for the ' absence of Mr. T. E. Taylor, who had been ' advertised to speak. Mr C. Palk gave an ! address, and on the motion of Mr A. D. Hassall, seconded by Mr J. Forbes, was ' accorded a very hearty vote of thanks for p his able address. , , Liquidator's Eeport. — Mr G. F. Clulee, , liquidator of the South Canterbury Salei yards Company, called a final meeting of the shareholders on Saturday to present tlie closing account. Only four shareholders attended. The statement of accounts was read, which showed that, after paying all liabilities and providing for the liquidation expenses, there remained .£BOO 12s 5d for distribution, which had all been paid out except the payments to three shareholders, | whose addresses were not known. The distribution represented lis 8d per share or [ 7s 9£d in the pound on the capital paid in. A formal resolution was passed directing the storage of the books and papers in compliance with the Act. New Brighton Sailing Club. — A meeting of the Committee of the New Brighton Sailing Club was held at Warner's Hotel on Saturday night. Mr J. W. Malcolmson, commodore of the club, presided. Arrangements were made in connection . with the opening of the season on Oct. 17, " r - when there will be a procession, two han- [ dicap sailing, and two handicap punt races. L It was decided to hold the annual dinner on , the night of the opening day, at the ' Bower Hotel. Messrs Malcolmson, Page, [ Thomas and Gee were appointed a committee to supervise the arrangements on the opening day. Three new members were elected. ■
