THE SYDNEY CARNIVAL. [Per Press Association.! SYDNEY, Oct. 3. At the Cycling Carnival F. G. Simpson, the representative of the New Zealand Cyclists Alliance, won the Three-mile Test Race, and also won his heat in the Half-mile Test Eace, bnt was beaten by Goodman, of Queensland in the Five-mile Test. The Cyclists' Union Carniyal, which has for its chief object the selection of Australasian representatives *to proceed to England, began to-day, and concludes on Monday. The Three-mile Test Match was somewhat of & fiasco, as six out of the eight starters stopped, as- they anticipated thau thejje would be a fresh start. Swenson, of Queensland, and Marsden, of Sydney, held on, but' with the exception of Kerr,, the New South Wales champion, and Simpson, oPNew Zealand, the others left the track. Kerr and Simpson set out after the leaders, who had gained a good three parts of a lap start. The gap was soon reduced, and then a ding-dong battle took place between Kerr and the New Zealander, the latter gaining the verdict by a couple of lengths. Time — 9min 25£ sec. In the Half-mile Test Match only the heats were decided, and the final will be decided on Monday. Simpson won his heat in lmin 18|sec, while Kerr got a place in the second heat in lmin 19-jj-sec. The Five-mile Test Match, which was a great race, was decided in the last two laps when Kerr and Simpson, who had been watching one another, moved forward. Simpson beat his opponent, but Goodson, of Queensland, who rode with splendid judgment, kept the lead and won by a length. Time — 13min 414 sec. The chief position is to be decided by points, and at present the score stands thus i^r-Simpson five points, Kerr three, Goodson. three, Marsden one. None of the New Zealand competitors were successful in the foot races.
