RAILWAY RATES.
• While the Railway Estimates were under ' discussion in the House of Representatives on Tuesday night, Mr Collins drew the attention of the Minister to the fact that the railway rates between Lyttelton and Christchurch were heavier than on any similar line in the colony, and had had the effect of causing business firms to transfer their business from Christchurch to other places. He hoped that the Minister would be able to give some hope that the rates would be reduced. Mr Lewis supported Mr Collins iii his remarks, and pointed out this particular line had been constructed by the province and was in a different position from other lines in the colony. He also referred to the excessive charges made for carting at Christchurch railway station. The Minister said he did not think that Canterbury people had much to complain of respecting railway rates, and he considered it would be unwise to reduce the rates on the Lyttelton-Christchurch railway line. He informed Mr Lewis that the Department did not make any profit out of railway cartage.
