SOME STATISTICS.

TO THE EDITOR.

Sir, — Bishop Nevill urged, quite recently, the industry of straw plaiting for the consideration of our thriftless and shiftless unemployed. La Nazione, of Florence, states that the -women and girls of that town can scarcely earn above ten centissimi (one penny !) for a whole day's work ; and, having to provide their own wax and thread, their wage is probably about three farthings a day ! Their food consists of black bread with a leek rubbed on it to give it a flavour. But in Northern Italy the peasantry cannot afford even bread. They live chiefly on maize, and maize that is affected by fungus, which is said to attack 100,000 of them yearly, killing 4000. Armenia is not solitary in her sorrows. When will there be a crusade against the wicked commercialism which stalks triumphant over our beautiful earth? — I am, &c, M. B.
