THE LABOUR MARKET.
The Journal of the Department of Labour, published on August 22, has the following remarks in reference to the labour market in Canterbury : — Rangiora. — Building trades: Dull. Engineering trades: Fairly good. Boot and clothing trades: Dull. Eetail trade : Not so good as last month. Unsldlled labour: Considerably better state of things than last year. Chmtohurch. — Building trades: No perceptible change from last month. Engineering trades : Slightly quieter than during the previous month. Boot trade : Bather quiet, this being the slack month of the year. Clothing trade: Slack. Eetail trade: Fair trade; much better than previous years at this season. Unskilled labour : A good many applications for work ; thirty-seven men sent to Governmentand private workduringthenionth. Ashburton. — Building and engineering trades: slack. Boot and clothing trades: Fair. Eetail trade : Dull. Unskilled labour : The bad weather has retarded outdoor work, consequently men have made very little time during the month. Timaru. — Building trades: Bad weather has prevented much advance. Engineering trade : Dull. Boot trade: Very busy. Clothing trade : Dull. Unskilled labour : No demand, owing to bad weather; and farm work especially almost at a standstill. Several married and single men seeking cooperative work. Waimate. — Building trades : Busy. Engineering trades : Dull. Boot and clothing trades : Fairly busy. Eetail trade: Fairly good. Unskilled labour : A good many married and single men will require work as soon as repairs to roads and bridges are finished. About thirty men now employed at repairs.
