The principal. scorers for Essex were .— M'Gahey, st Kelly, b Trnmble 20 , Perrin, c Kelly b Trumble 35 Lucas, b Giffen ... ... 46 At the close of the day's play the Australians had lost four wickets for 78. Darling, c Lucas b Mead ... ..., ... 21 Gregory, not out 21 Mat 15. Essex showed only mediocre form at' the wickets, the exceptions being Perrin, an amateur colt, and Lucas, who showed some of his old form with the bat. Giffen took three wickets, Trumble four and Jones three. M'Kibbin was not tried. The fielding of the Australians Showed an improvement. Gregory played freely, but the others showed caution, Mead's bowling being dangerous. The Australians have lost seven wickets for 195 runs. The light was Jjadat starting. Trott, Gregory and Trumble were soon out, the bowling being good. Hill and Kelly then made a fine stand, putting on 85 runs. The Australians were all out for 223 runs. ' '
