MB CHAMBEBLAIN IN EXPLANATION. THE PRISONERS. A REBEL DEFEAT. [Per Press Association.! LONDON, Mat 15. Mr Chamberlain cabled to Sir H. Robinson that President Kruger had been misled by the brief reports cabled of the proceedings in the House of Commons. He had no intention of defending Mr Rhodes in his recent speech. The Government would wait for the decision . of the Joint Select Committee. He deprecated a hasty judgment being formed. Reports from the Rand state that, with, the exception of the leaders, it is likely that the other prisoners will be released with a fine instead of imprisonment. CAPETOWN, Mat 15. The Cape Assembly is in favour of reposing confidence in the Imperial enquiry into Transvaal matters. Mr Sprigg said that some lorm of Government like that exercised by the Chartered Company would be necessary for years. Napier defeated the rebel Induna, killing fifty of his followers. . He will effect a junction with Mr Rhodes with six hundred men. Heavy fighting is expected. Salisbury has three weeks' food supply.
