St Luke's Guild.— There was a large attendance at the monthly meeting of St 'Luke's Sunday School Guild last night. A, good programme was gome through very successfully. Tableaux illustrating "The Prodigal Son," "The Good Samaritan" and "Beauty and the Beast" were very well presented. The "poem "Mary, the Maid at the Inn" was recited, and illustrated by scenes acted in dumb show. Recitations were given fey Messrs c. Pratt and P. Smith and Misses Lizzie Williams and Ethel Grand. Kangioba Borough Council.— A special meeting of the above Council was held last ■night for the purpose of hearing and determining any claims, or objections to the Burgess list. There were present the Mayor and Councillors Blackett, Foster, Carmichael, Good, Graham, Sansom and Jennings. Apology was made for the absence of Councillor Cone. There being no claims or objections received, the ;Burgess roll was certified to as being correct. Tenders were accepted, Mr J. iPayne shingle carting at 2s per yard, and Mr W. Wadey erection' of fire-bell stand at JS4-4 ss. This concluded the business. . Cust. — Last evening a meeting of temperance workers in the western portion of the Kaiapoi electorate took place at |the Institute Hall. There was a good attenIdance, including representatives from West 'Eyreton, Carlton, Oxford and Horrelville. The convener, Mr A. D. Hassall, presided. 'A very animated discussion took place on jthe future work of the Prohibition party, iand the platform which should" be adopted. It was heartily agreed to endorse the action of the Prohibition Council in seeking legislation in the direction of a national vote en -fee Kquor question, the placing of crabs Tinder the provisions of the Licensing Act, and the substitution of a bd^e majority instead of three-fifths as applied to the local option vote. The meeting was unanimously of opinion that it was highly expedient, in view of the approaching elections, that the solid vote of the party should be given to the candidate who might be selected to run in the interests of Prohibition. The following were selected to represent the undermentioned places of the central meeting, "to be-held at Eangiora : — Carlton, Mr H. Seed ; West •Eyreton, Mr W. Turner ; Horrelville r Mr E. The game, which will be played on Monday, May 25, at Lancaster Park, promises to be an interesting one. The Akaroa Club will play the Christchurch Second on the same date. • Christchurch Volunteer Eange Association. — The annual meeting "of delegates was held on Monday evening, when there, was a good attendance, Captain Creswell being in the chair. The accounts for the year ending March.' -31 showed receipts .£B2 6s 2d and expenditure .£63 13s lid, leaving a credit balance of JJIB 12s 3d. The election of officers resulted as follows : — Honorary secretary, Private Moore (College Rifles) ; honorary treasurer, Colour-Sergeant Steere (City Guards, reelected); auditors, Sergeant-Major Tostcr and Sergeant-Major Treleaven. The Winter Show. — The arrangements for holding the Winter Show of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association „ are now nearly completed, and a number of the exhibitors who have taken special space are- busy fitting up their stands. The committee who have the arrangements in hand have not yet decided upon the order of the lectures, which will deal with agricultural subjects. Entertainmeente will also be given in connection with the show, which will be opened by the Mayor of Christchurch at noon on Wednesday, and will continue until Saturday evening. . National Association. — The Council of the National Association met at the rooms, Morten's Buildings, on Thursday evening, Mr Charles Lewis, MJEI.R., occupying the chair. Seven new members were elected. A -delegate was appointed to represent the Association at the proposed conference to consider the surplus labour difficulty. The Secretary reported that, during the week, a branch of the Association had been formed at Linwood. In view of the approaching session of Parliament, a subcommittee was appointed to draft programmes of business to be transacted at the general, meetings of members throughout the winter months. Canterbubt Women's Institute. — The usual fortnightly meeting of this institute was held last night in the Chancery Lane Hall. About thirty members were present; Miss Sherriff-Bain in the chair. It was decided to make the requisite arrangements for a lecture on the Hare system of voting to be given by Mr Alfred Saunders, M.H.E. The platform of the Women's Democratic Union of Wellington was read, and it was decided that the institute should federate with the Wellington Union. A pamphlet on " Divorce/ by Dr I Kilgour, of Auckland, was then read, in which he gave thirteen reasons for which divorce should be obtainable.
