A NARROW ESCAPE.

THE STEAMER UPOLU. [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, Mat 15. The Upolu had a narrow escape from stranding on the voyage to Westport. Yesterday afternoon, when off Sinclair Head, the weather became very thick and the land was lost sight of. The captain gave orders for the vessel to go dead slow, and shortly afterwards the haze lifted, and it was seen that' the vessel . -was only about a ship's length off the rocks in Oterangi Bay. ' The captain immediately gave the order "full speed astern." Those in the engine-room thought that the vessel had struck, but those on deck were of a contrary, opinion. The captain sounded and found that the vessel was making no water, but decided to return to Wellington. The diver made an examination this ; morning, and found not the slightest . trace of "any injuries. The captain attributes the fact of his being five or six miles out of his course to the thick weather, and an ebb tide catching the vessel on the port boat and setting her inshore.
