ATHLETIC NOTES.
[By Sprinter in " Canterbury Time3."J W. L. Mendelson cleared 21ft Bin in the Long Jump at the Oxford-Cambridge Sports. Gt. M. Harris, of the Blackheath Harriers, has won the club's' cross-country challenge cup no less than eleven times. - The trophyis competed for in the spring and autumn of each year, the distance being five miles. Harris gained his fir3t success in 1890 ; and except for one defeat in 1892, when he fell before H. C. Scard, he has never loosed his hold upon the cup— the last seven races having ended in his favour. The tenth annual Scottish. Cross-country Championship took place at Edinburgh on March 14, only two clubs, the Edinburgh Harriers and the Clydesdale, competing. The course was a double one of five miles circuit, all over plough and road. The race ended in an easy victory for the Clydesdale men, who finished first, second, third, fourth, sixth, and seventh, with twentythree points. The individual championship was won by 'A. Hannah, who' finished 1 a couple of yards in front of S. Duffus. Time i — 65inin 15sec • L Cambridge won the match against Oxford, on March 27, by five events to [ four. The Light Blues scored in the Milo by the aid of H. F. Howard, time 4min ' 29|sec ; in the Quarter-mile with TV; FitzHerbert, time 49£ sec ; in the Hammer with . A. B. Johnstone, distance 107 ft 7in ; in \ the Long Jump with Batchelor, distance 22ft 7in ; and, in Putting the Weight with Bullock, distance 38ft 2in. Freemantle, t Oxford, and W. V. Wood, Cambridge, ran a . great race in the Three Miles contest, P which the former won, in 15min 12sec. I The other Oxonians who won were Jordan, in the 100 yds, in 10} sec • Gamier, in the I 120 yds Hurdle Race, hi 163 sec ; and E. O. Kirlew, in the High Jump (height, sft • B|in).
