— ■» . The Minister op Lands. — The Hon John M'Kenzie addressed a public meeting at East Oxford last evening. He will arrive in town to-night, and -will leave for "Wellington to-morrow. . • Unwholesome Meat. — An information has been sworn by Mr C. B. Bfassey, City Inspector, against a local butcher, for having in his possession meat unfit for human consumption. The Richmond Ward Election. — Mr J. A. Fle3her has retired from the election of a .representative of the Richmond Ward on the City Council in favour of Mr H. H. Loughnan, who has been- declared duly .elected. " St John's Chuech.— A meeting is called by advertisement of the parisliioners and friends of St John's Church, Latimer Square, for eight o'clock this evening, with the view of forming a ladies, committee to co-operate with the vestry. Euchre. — A euchre match was played last evening, at the Linwood Athletic Club's rooms, between a team from the latter and one from the.Linwood bachelors, lit resulted in a draw, each side winning (fourteen games. . After the match the visitors were suitably entertained. ; Heathcote Road JBoabd.— Mr G-. Mitchell, who resigned his position as the representative of the Opawa Ward on the Hoathcote Road Board, has consented to represent the ward for another year. Nominations for the position .closed at noon to-day, and Mr Mitchell being the only person nominated, was declared dnly elected. Band op Hope.— The entertainment given in the Blue Ribbon Hall in connection with the Central Mission Band of Hope was a very enjoyable one. The president. Mr Bastion, was in the chair. The programme included songs by Miss Tonge and Messrs E. Jones and Brinn, and also .by Messrs Coleman and Walker, of the r Pennant Lodge, HJfLS. Rapid ; recitations ''by Miss Bessie; Gross and Master S. Waters, and a reading by: Mr Bastion. ' Miss Tonge played the accompaniments. A dialogue was well given by six members of the Band of Hope. . St Andrew's Church. — The anniversary services in connection with St Andrew's Presbyterian Church, which cake place on .Sunday, will be of a more than usually interesting nature. The Rev James Gibb, of First Church, Dunedin, will preach both morning and evening. In addition to this preasher's well-known popularity, it may be mentioned that he has just returned from attending the Presbyterian Assembly in Scotland, and therefore his Addresses should be of .more than ordinary interest. In the afternoon a children's service will be held, when the Rer James Paterson, of Wellington, will give an ad•dress. • Ballance Liberal Association. — The fortnightly meeting of this Association was held' last evening-, Mr J. H. M'Millan presiding. It was resolved that the Hon Minister of Education and the Education Boards be written to as to ex-Standard VI. pupils whoattendthepublicprimary schools, .and amending the Act so as to provide for their education. A letter from the Workers' ! Political Committee was referred to a .committee. It was resolved that Mr C. Louisson be invited to give an address on May 28. The rules relative to the Canterbury Federated Labour Councils were considered, and after a good deal of discussion were passed. Several new members were fproposed, and the meeting terminated. Ltttblton Borough Rates. — A meeting of ratepayers was held in the Colonist's Hall, Lyttelton, last night, to further conaider the* proposal to increase the rate. There was a large attendance and his Worship the Mayor occupied the chair. Councillor Webb explained having called the meeting to allow further consideration of the subject, and after giving his reasons for thinking that a rate of 9d in the pound was sufficient, moved " That in the opinion , of this meeting the action of the Council in proposing an increase of 3d in the pound is unwarrantable and should not be carried .out." Mr N. C. Schumacher seconded the motion, which was supported by Mr A. Chalmers. Councillor Laurenson moved as an amendment, " That this meeting desirest to leave the decision respecting the amount of rates necessary for carrying on the work ,of the borough in the hands of the men elected by them for that purpose." Mr G. Agar seconded the amendment, which was r supported by Councillors Grabb andiHobden, and Mr T. L. Smith, and upon being put was declared to. .be 'carried by 50 votes to 30. A vote of thanks to the Mayor concluded the proceedings. Personal.— Sir John Hall, Colonel Fox and Mr G. G. Stead went north by the Takapuna yesterday. Kingslet Club. — A pound "social," in connection with the Kingsley Club was held in St John's Schoolroom last night, and was a very successful gathering. Presbyterian Conference.— The delegates from the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand and the Presbyterian Church ofOtago and Southland concluded their deliberations yesterday. H.M.S. Rapid.— A large party of blue jackets and marines from H.M.S. Rapid at Lyttelton came ashore yesterday and were exercised for some time at company and gun drill on the recreation ground. Open Air Music— The Engineers' Band mil play selections of sacred music from the works of Gounod, Beethoven, Donizetti and others, in the Garden^, on Snnday. at 2.30 p.m., weather permitting. A collection will be taken up for the benefit oi Herrick's.Home. • , Theatre Rotal..— There was a capita' house at the Theatre Royal last night, « spite of the very unpleasant weather, whei Pollard's Opera Company repeated Audran's comic opera Olivette. The performanc< was thoroughly successful, the little de tfects noticeable in the first productioi ' having been remedied. The audience wa: most 'appreciative, all the principal num bers being encored. This- evening Offen bach's sparkling opera jDaJPiHe Au Tambov Major will be presented. Miss Lily Everett -who recently rejoined the company, wil take the part of Griolet. Mr Duval, th advance resresentative of the compauj left yesterday for Dunedin, to arrange f o the season there. Limoges is about to have an exhibitio: of the history of porcelain to celebrate, th centenary of the introduction of Limoge ware.
