SWIMMING.
Yesterday afternoon a swimming carnival, promoted by Professor Pannell, was held in the Lancaster Park bath. Professor Pannell, assisted by two of his pupils, Messrs T. H. Harker and J. Hall, gave a splendid exhibition of fancy and trick swimming. Some of the feats performed were very clever, and elicited loud applause. A 50yds schoolboys' race was won by C. Craddock (Richmond) scr, W. Cardwell (Richmond) 6sec, being second, and B. Papps (East Christchurch) 3sec, third. Time — 51sec. A 50yds handicap was won by C. Craddock (Richmond) ssec, with J. L. Northey (Richmond) scr, second, and B. Papps (East Christchurch) 9sec, third. Time — 49sec. J. L. Northey 1 Richmond) won the turning competition, and gave an exhibition of plunging. On Wednesday evening the East Christchurch Amateur Swimming Club held [ a club championship race of 100 yds, which resulted in a win for T. Wauchop by a yard, after a splendid race with H. Bullivant, who beat E. A. Roper for second place by about the same distance. P. Stokes also started, but gave up after completing sixty yards. Time — 78sec. Mr E. W. Roper acted as starter and timekeeperi and Messrs ¥. W. Johnston and Wathew as judges. Wauchop's win was deservedly popular, as he has been a most consistent swimmer, but, owing to handicaps, has never before won a race.
