Pbrsonal.—The Hon Sir Eobert Stout, (Colonel llama (Commissioner of Police), *nd Mr Inspector Pender arrived from Wellington this morning. Prohibition.—A prohibition meeting •will be held in the Knightstown Library, St Albans, on Monday evening, when addresses will be delivered by the Rev F. W. Isitt and others. Linwood Borough Council.—At the request of a large number of the ratepayers in the Linwood borough, Mr J. EnTSRTAINMENT.— The Bickerton Bros, gave one of their unique entertainments at the Oddfellows* Hall, Kaiapoi, last evening. The attendance was not so good as tho performance merited. ■ Kaiapoi Volunteers and Cadets.—• The annual inspection of arms was made by Colonel Gordon last evening, at the drill-shed, when there waa a muster of fifty-two adults and forty-two cadets. The Colonel expressed pleasure at finding everything in. excellent order. ' New Brighton.—An artesian well will shortly be sunk in the Park aty New Brighton,' the. Selwyn County _ Counoil having given a grant in aid. This plantation is becoiniqg a favourite resort. The entrance is by a turnstile a few chains north of the tram bridge. Another turnstile, giving direct access from the beach, also been provided. , Sunday Services.—At ' the Trinity Congregational Church the Rev C. H. Penny will preach in the morning and the Rev S. J. Baker in tho evening. At tho Bible Christian Church, Lower HighSfcreet, the Rev A. Mitchell will preach in the morning, and in the evening a memorial, service .wjll ho held. Services will he hold at the Temple of Truth morning, affcerr noon and evening. Fire Brigade Demonstration. — A large number of favourable replies have be»n received to the circular requesting influential citizens to become members of a committee for the purpose of assistine in carrying one the forthcoming United Fire Brigade.' demonstration. The draft programme has been drawn up, and will be submitted to the committee, the first meeting of which is to be held on Dec. 10. Tram Excursion,—The New Brighton Tramway Company announces that tho first evening excursion of the season will be run on Monday, accompanied by the Engineers' Band, leaving Cathedral Square at 7.15 p,m. The return, fare will be sixpence. On and after Monday the 8.30 p.m. tram from New Brighton will be discontinued, and tramß will leave every every ovoning (except Sundays) at 9 and 10.10. • Lyceum.—The lecture at the Lyceum by Mr W. W. Collinß tomorrow is on •' Judas Tscariof, the Betrayer." The Harper Case.—The charges against Mr L. Harper will be heard before bis BJonor Mr Justice Dennioton and a special jury at 11 a.m. on Monday next. Proposed Musical Festival. —It is stated that since the meeting, on Thursday evening a number of tha guarantors have intimated their intention of withdrawing frora tbe propoaal. Christchuroh Fire Bbigade.—Applications will "he received up to 5 p.m. on Monday, Dec.-0/ at the City Council office for an engineer (certificated) and enginekeeper for the Chrietohurch Fire Brigade. Christ's College. — The examination for four Somes scholarships will be held ac Christ's Colleg;* on Doc. 9. Candidates must send in their names to the bursar of the college on or before Tuesday next. Amateur Athletics.—The championship meeting of tho Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club will ba held at Lancaster Park on Thursday and Saturday next. Auction Sales.—Messrs Ayers, Beauchamp and Co. announce auction sales of fruit and of bamboo verandah blinds, for Monday, at their rooms. Canterbury Yacht Club.—A meeting of the committee of this club was held at the Canterbury Hotel, Lyttelton, last night. Mr J. Joyce, M.H.8., commodore, presided. !lt waa resolved to open the season with a regatta on Thursday, Dec. 12, the proceeds to supplement the amount voted by the Begatta Committee for the First-class Yacht Bace. Messrs A. Aschman and G. Dimond were appointed starter and handicapper respectively. It was decided to invite the assistance of the Christchurch and New Brighton Sailing Clubs, and to insert a race suitable for boats of that class. The New South Wales Cricket Team.—Mr O. B. Smith, Secretary of the Cricket Counoil, has received information that a change has been made in the composition of the New South Wales team, which is to play its first New Zealand match here on Dec. 14. Mr A. Furness has been substituted for Mr B. Lindsay, who is unable to leave Sydney. Mr Smith has also been informed that the Mr Callaway included in the team is the player who did so well in the Australian eleven playing again Stoddart's team at Adelaide last season, and was in New Zealand a few years ago. An impression prevailed here that it was not this player, but his younger brother, who is a member of the coming team. Amateur Athletics.—-The following is an extract from a letter from the honorary seoretary of the New South Wales Amateur Athletic Association, to the honorary secretary of the New Zealand Amatenr Athletic Association, dated Nov. 21, 1895:—"At a meeting of the Executive held last night, it waa decided to send a team of eight, which will leave Sydney on Dec. 19 or 20, per Union, Company's |bpafc vii Wellington. As requested, as soon as we book the passages I will cable you. We are holding a meeting of the Executive next Wednesday night, after which I will write and let you know definitely re engaging rooms, and the number who purpose making the trip. I think in all twelve will leave Sydney. My Executive ia of opinion that Queensland should be allowed to compete ab the sports, under Clause 7 of the agreement, and contest for the colonieß championship. Our tests or trials take place Saturday week at Lillie Bridge, and for every event good entries have been received, from which a team that will not disgrace the colony can be picked." Market Gardeners' Association.—lt is intended to hold a free exhibition of fruit and vegetables on Wednesday next in the Art Gallery, in order to' bring together growerß and consumers. Memorial Service.—A memorial service fpr the late Mr W. Skinner, a prominent Oddfellow, will be held in the Bible Christian Church, Lower High Street, to-morrow evening, when the Bey A. Mitchell will preach a funeral sermon. , Theatre Eoyal.—The Brough-Bouci-canlt season of eleven nights, at the Theatre Eoyal, will begin on Wednesday next, when An Ideal Husband will be played. On. Thursday and Friday The Case of Rebellious Susan will be presented, followed by A Village Priest on Saturday and The Amazons on Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 9 and 10.
