INTERCHANGEABLE TEEMS.
People living outaide New Zealand have ! been frequently puzzled by the inter- ! changeable use of the- terms " South.l Island w and "Middle, Inland,'? and have 'naturally concluded that the former designation applied to Sfcewarb Island. In the . course of the Midland Bail way arbitration proceedings at Wellington on Tuesday, I Sir Charles Lilley, says the New Zealand [Times, remarked that thiß confusion was | apparent in most of the books relating to New Zealand. He presumed that " North Island," "Middle Island," and "South Island" were the official titles, the last appellation being given to Stewart Island. Sir Robert Stout shook his head in serious doubt) and Sir Charles Lilley did not venture to purßue the subject further.
