Gunthorpe and Beese took np the bowling. Three of the Wellington wickets fell quickly, and five were down for 90 runs when Holdship and Howard became partners. The former, who was stiff at first, warmed np after an hour's play and made things lively for both bowlers. Both men continued punishing the bowling severely, bnt the Wellington captain should have been easily Btumped off the left-hander. At 123 Bassal relieved Gunthorpe, and shortly afterwards Prankish replaced Raese. At noon the loore stood 223 for five wickets. Holdship. was caught at 188, after compiling 47, including six fours. After he left Howard continued to hit in effeotive style, and was not disposed of till he had made SI. He gave one difficult ohance to short Bquare-leg, otherwise his innings was a good display of free batting. At the luncheon adjournment Wellington had increased the score to 214 for nine wickets.
