COUNTRY NEWS.

South Canterbury Art Society.— -On Wednesday evening a general meeting of the South Canterbury Art Society was held, when a constitution was adopted. The Yen Archdeacon Harper was elected president, Mr E. M. Blake secretary, and Mr Bule treasurer. It was resolved that an exhibition should be arranged for January next.

CONFIRHATION S»BTICB. — The Bight Bey Bishop Julius held a confirmation service at St Stephen's Chuich, Peel Forest, on the evening of Tuesday, Sept. 3, when seven candidates were, presented by the Bey James Preston. The church was filled, there being nearly one hundred present. A most impressive address was given by his Lordship, and was listened to with the greatest attention.

Tbmuka Caledonian Society. — The annual meeting of the Temuka Caledonian' Society was held in the Boyal Hotel on Wednesday evening last. The VicePreßident (Mr D. Henry) occupied the chair. . Hampstbad School Committbb.— The monthly meeting of the Hampatead School Committee was held on Tuesday evening. The master's report stated the average attendance to be 330.' It-was resolved to send notices to the parents of children uot attending school regularly, and to take immediate action where the notices were not complied with. It was reaolved to a&k the Board of Education to temporarily appoint another teacher. . The Inspector's report on the late examination was read as.d considered satisfactory.

The L&tb Bey B. M'Obeoob. — Great regret was felt at Kaiapoi at tbe news of the death, at Hawera, of the Eev K. M'Qregdr, late Prosbyterian minister at Kaiapoi. The deceased left Kaiapoi some four or five years ago to settle at flawora, in the hope that. the change of climate might be benefioial to his health, which had for some time been failing. He took up' duties there in the ministry, but lately was engaged in farming. He died of consumption on Tuesday last. He leaves a wife and grown up family. - '

Woodend— The last of the series of winter entertainments in connection with the St Barnabas Church was held in the' Oddfellowß* Hal), on Wednesday evening. The firat part consisted of songs and instrumental music, contributed' by Mrs Chapman, Misses Tipping, Horrell (2), Fear and Elsie Archer, Messrs W. Parsons, W. Gray and P. D. Mossman. The second part consisted of a dramatic sketch, which was well performed by Misses Adams, M. and B. M'Donald, and E. Croaaley. and Messrs B. Ensor, J. Croaaley and B. M'Donald. ; ,
