Abbebt. — Detective Marsack to-day ' arrested a man on a charge of larceny from a dwelling at Orari. The prisoner is also suspected of having broken into a houso at Cashmere. Citt Cotwci-.. — Mr G. Pots, pane, &c, were blown about in all directions, and houses shivered under the force of the squalls. Muoh rain has fallen ; the weather this morning is very wild. PoiNT-TO-PoiNT StEEPJ-ECHABB. — The annual Point-to-Point Steeplechase in connection with the Christchurch Hunt Club will take place at Templeton on Saturday. Theatbb Boyal.— Hr G. Leitch's Land of the Moa Dramatic Company, whioh has been doing excellent business in Dunedin, leaves there by the Tarawera to-day, and should arrive in Chrißtchnrch to-morrow. Owing to the preparations for the staging of the piece being very elaborate, the company will not open here until Monday evening. The box plan is now open at Messrs Milner and Thompson's. Old Otago Illustrated. — The illustrations and historical sketch of Otago in the early days, which appear in this week's Canterbury Times, are a pronounced success, and the number has so many other attractive features that it cannot fail to achieve an almost record circulation. The publisher is already in a position to say that to secure extra copies orders must be sent in at once. Winter Work Fund. — The Christchnrch, Sydenham and Bichmond Working Men's Clubs have arranged to give a combined entertainment on behalf of the Winter Work Fund on Thursday, Sept. 12, in the hall of the Christoharoh Clnb. The Mayor of Christohnrch has signified hid intention to keep the fund open to receive the proceeds, and the members of all the clubs are earnestly requested to push the sale of tickets, whioh may be had from the several custodians. Benefit Concebt. — The concert previously given in aid of Herrick's Home was repeated to a crowded honse at the Oddfellowß' Hall last evening; when the varions items were mnch appreciated. The programme was nnder the direction of Mr A. Corriok. The soloists were Mioses A. Corrick, Palmer and Campbell, Mrs Corriok and Messrs E. Lovell, H. De Maus, B. Halley and A. F. Young. Mrs Corrick and Mr Lovell sang a duet, and vocal numbers were contribnted the by St Andrew's choir, instrumental music being furnished by Mr A, Corriok's band. Christ's College.— a " camp-fire entertainment" was given last evening at Christ's College by the Christ's College Bifles, There was a good attendance, including the Wellington College football team, and Borne members of the Nelson College team. Songs were sung by Private Maroh, Sergeant Cololougb, Corporal Merton, Sergeant Hartland, Colour-Sergeant Curry, Private Stewart, Private Bell, Captain Day, Lance-Corporal Carew and Corporal Appleby.
