The Victorian Tariff.

[Special to Pbkss Association.] SYDNEY August 28. Mr Duffy, the Victorian Postmaster•General, in the course of an interview, -aaid that though hia colony had given a ▼cry definite decision against prohibitive duties, it did not amount to a freetrade reaction. The question at the laßt election was prohibition, and the oountry spoke very strongly against it in favour of a revenue-producing tariff. The interests dependent on protection were so large and -various that any decided step towards freetrade wonld cause a strong counteraction. The freetraders realised this, and tho policy of both parties was moderation and caution. Federation was a live question in Victoria, but the return of New -South Wales to freetrade was a serious obstacle. Victoria had no desire to exploit the markets of this colony, and had lifted herself above such sordid surroundings. MELBOUBNE, Atjotst 28, In the Assembly, propo. '>1 . t 0 abolish "the duty on tea, and also to iedu. . P. .*. a -.penny, were negatived.
