— — Bangiora Bobough Council* —Mr Jameß Carmichael has been nominated for one of the vacancies in the Rangiora Borough Council. Art Society.— An endeavour is to be made to establish an Art Society in Timaru on the lines, generally, of the one in Christohurch. A meeting is to be held this week to set the society on foot, and the promoters have received many promises of support. Tai Tapu Daisy Company.— The annual meeting of shareholders in the Tai Tapu Co-operative Dairy Company took plaoe yesterday. ■ Considerable interest was taken in the proceedings, and the meeting lasted from 1.30 p.m. until 8.45 p.m. Seven peraons were proposed for tbe four vacancies on the Board of Directors, and no fewer than 596 votes were recorded, while twelve papers were informal; A very large number of proxies were used, and as the numbers show, very few Bhares were not represented. Ashley. — The fortnightly meeting of the Ashley Mutual Improvement Society was held on Thursday evening. Mr L. Wright occupied the chair. It was decided to arrange a benefit concert in September for a resident who lost his right hand some months ago., A debate took place on " Prohibition v. Begnlation," the aides being taken by Messrs Potter and Cairns respectively. After an animated discussion a vote was taken, and resulted in favour of prohibition by a majority of six to one. Fendalton.— A concert and entertainment took place in the district sohoolroom on Friday, August 23, in aid of the vicarage repairs fund. Miss C. Lingard played a piano solo with her accustomed skill, and Miss Davie, Miss Helmore and Messrs Merton and Sims contributed first-class songs. Mr S eager illustrated the singing of "The Brook" and "Village Blacksmith " with appropriate limelight views. Mr George Harris gave a very interesting aocount of his winter trip to the West Coast. The limelight views with which he illustrated hia lecture were greatly admired, after a cordial vote of thanks to the lecturer and those who took part in the concert, the proceedings were brought to a close by singing the National Anthem. Band of Hope.: — There was a good attendance at the first annual meeting of the Burwood Band of Hope, held in the • schoolroom on Friday evening. The annual report showed that there are now eighty members on the roll, and the society has a credit balance in band. The following officers were elected for the ensuing six months : — President, Mr S. Judd (re-elected) j vice-president, Mr J. 'de Lacour (re-elected) ; treasurer, Mr Burson (re-elected) ; secretary, Mrs Spencer; committee, Miss Beckingsale, Mesdames Judd, Palmer, Grant, Spencer, Messrs Grant, Beckingsale, Burson, Judd and De Lacour. Eecitations were given j by Misßes A. Martin, M. White, J. White and Master Ernest Palmer, and a eong by I Mr Beckingsale. The meeting closed with i the benediction.
