FOOTBALL.
The Auckland footballers arrived in Christohuroh from Dunedin by the express train last evening, and were met by a large number of Canterbury enthusiasts The teaui were driven to the Clarendon Hotel, where tbey will locate during their stay in Chrietchurch. The New Zealand Rugby Union has appointed Mr J. P. Firth, of Wellington, referee in the Canterbury • Auckland match on Thursday. There will be no meeting of the Canterbury Rugby Union this evening. The Wanganui Collegiate School will try conclusions with Christ's College on the College ground this afternoon, and aa both teams essay the modern open style of play, a good game is anticipated. [Per Pbess Association.] WELLINGTON, August 26. Wellington College beat Nelson College this afternoon by twenty points to nil. Payton, Edwards, Palerhorpe, Eemby and M'Ara scored tries, one of whioh Haleß converted, while Haleß also kioked a penalty goal. The scoring was done in the second spell. The Nelson backs played up well and quite held their own in the first ; spell, but fell to pieces in the second half. Both teams left for the South by the j Tarawera at 5.30 p.m. DUNEDIN, August 26. The takings at the Auokland-Otago matoh, £152, indicate that about 5000 peraons were present. Eaoh member of the Caledonian Sooiety, with three of his family, has a right of entry, and many small boys as usual scaled the fences. The matoh is generally regarded as one of the fastest' and most interesting played in j Dunedin. Through mistaken information it was stated that Absolum mulled at the beginning, whereas it was Gage. It was Absolum who snapped up the ball from Cunningham and started the passing whioh ended in a score, going from one end of the ground to the other, and forming the finest bit of play sinoe the English team's visit.
