POLITICAL NOTES.
[FKOM OUB OWN OOBRXSPONDXKT.j * WELLINGTON, August 26. MBDICAIi GONOBSSS. A deputation, consisting of Drs Batchelor and L. Ferguson (Dnnedin)* and Cahiil (Wellington) was introduced to the Premier this morning by Mr Pinkerton and requested certain concessions in connection with the medioal congress, to be held at Dunedin in February next. It was mentioned that the Government had already promised to grant free railway passes to medioal men from other colonies, aud the deputation urged that looal medical men should be granted a reduction of fares. It also requested the Government to undertake the printing pf the transactions of the congress, as had . been done on similar occasions by the Governments of other colonies. The Premier said he could not accede to tho request for railway concessions to looal medioal representatives, and ns to printing the report of the proceedings the matter would have to be submitted to the Cabinet, which he promised to do. THE VACANT JODOSBHIP. I hear on good authority that there is a large amount of truth in the statement made in Mr Duthie'B question on this Bubjeot, to the effect that Supreme Court work in Wellington has fallen largely in arrears since the death of the lato Mr Justioe Richmond; Thiß may be partly owing to the infirmity of the Chief Justice, bnt that this i« not the sole or prinoipal cause is proved by tbe fact that the judicial work in the Wellington district ie usually just about double what it is in other distriots; Gossip has, for the past week or bo, been silent on the subject of the probable new judge, the id«a being that Ministers do not intend to make an appointment until after Parliament has prorogued. Probably when the banking question is disposed of, Ministers will give attention to the claim advanced that it is absolutely necessary to fill the vacant judgeship.
