COUNTRY NEWS.
Pibe at German Bay.— A fire occurred at German Bay on Friday night, by which a newly-erected four-roomed house was totally destroyed. The building belonged to Mr Mora, who wai away at the time. Nothing is known aa to how the fire originated. The house was insured in the Phoenix. Akaboa.—- The Akaroa Football Club gave a very successful dance in the Oddfellows' Hall on Friday night. About eighty coupleß were present, including the members of the Chrißtohurch Club's team. The hall waa tastefully decorated with flags and plants. Dancing waa kept tip with spirit until an early hour. RoiiLXSTON. — A meeting of the Eolleaton School Committee waa held on Thursday evening. The chairman being absent, Mr Newton presided. The master's report showed the number on the roll to be 54 and the average attendance for the month 37*6. Considering the recent bad weather this was regarded as satisfactory. A resolution was passed expressing regret at the death of Mr Colborne-Veel, and sympathy with his family. Concbet at Belfast. — A conceit was given in the Belfast Town Hall on Thursday evening in aid of the Church of England Trußt Fund, and waa very well attended. Mr Macleod Smith, of Christchurch, undertook the direction of the concert, and he with all those who assisted gave his services gratuitously. The audience waa a v«ry appreciative one, almost all the items on the programme being redemanded. Songs were given by Mrs Searell, Misses M'Cready, Wood, Orchard, Messrs Buchanan, Sullivan, Mason, Master Hawkins and duets by Mrs Duff and Miss M'Cready, Messrs Sullivan and Mason. Miss Nora Smith and Master Norman gave piano duets, and quartettes and glees were also given. The Eev T. A. Meyer presided, A very enjoyable enter» tainment was closed by singing the National Anthem.
