CANTERBURY TROTTING CLUB. Handicappers, Messrs Hi Brinktnan, E. Clarkson and W. White. Starter, Mr C. O'Connor. The miscalled spring meeting of the Canterbury Trotting Club was held at Canterbury Park yesterday, in very wintry weather. The rain of th.c previous night had reduced the cußtodian's care-fully-prepared track to a sad meas, and the spectators' part of the grounds was ankle deep in mud, while a bitterly cold wind blew and heavy showers of rain fell frequently, so that mattera were extremely uncomfortable for both man and beast. Notwithstanding the unfavourable weather, there was a large attendance, including numerous ladies, and some excellent trotting was seen. Reversals of form compared with recent performances formed the ground of three protests, all of which were dismissed; otherwise everything went smoothly, and though the total of .£3661 passed through, the totalisator— in spite of a large amount of cash betting — is .£614 less than the total for the corresponding meeting of last year, the financial outcome should be satisfactory. The Christchurch Professional Band discoursed good music, Mr Baggey Bupplied a moßt excellent lunch, and Mr Fuchs dispensed refreshment.
