FREIGHT ON TIMBER.
I A deputation, representing sawmillers, waited on the Minister of Bailways at Wellington yesterday, and urged a reduction of the rates for the carriage of white pine by rail. They pointed out that there was a good demand for that class of timber in Australia, but the present prices and freight only left 3a per 100 ft .at the mill, which was insufficient for working expenses. They suggested a, reduction of 7d per 100 ft. The Minister promised to give the matter full consideration, .bat could not say that the rate asked for would be given effect to.
