QUALIFYING HUNTERS.
r* A large number of- sportsmen and others assembled at the Keahele, Tinwald,' yesterday afternoon to witp^es the ordeal of qualifying hunters over the new course prepared by the Master of the Tin wald Harriers, Mr G. A. M'Lean Baokley. Instead of giving a certificate as a, hunter ; in respect o£ any horse that has put in. an appearance at three meets of the hounds Mr Bnckley hsa this year instituted a new plan. Any horse requiring a certificate from him must qualify over a twomile steeplechase course, containing nineteen jnmpa of various descriptions ; and not only has to get over the jumps in fair style, but within a specified fifteen 7 minutes. The coarse was very nicely laid out near the Kennels by Mr Buckley; and included jumps of almost every description. The horaea started three at a time, and as all the jumps were easily Been from the centre of the course, the sport was thoroughly enjoyed by a large number of spectators. Longfellow, Victor and The' Joker covered the distance in splendid style in 6min fieec, all the horses jumping beautifully. Gillie, Gamester and Vagabond were the next three, the two former jumping well, but Vagabo'-'' >opeatedly refused, and did not cover the outiree in the allotted time. The Bag and Patch were sent away together, and covered the course in good style. The last two to qualify were ■ Bainbow and Vagabond, Price having the mount on the latter this time. The jumping was not brilliant, but both horses got safely round the course in the specified time. One or two more days will be set aside for qualifying during the season. ■' :
