Mutual Improvement Societies.

The weekly meeting of 8t Saviour's Mutual Improvement Society was held in the schoolroom on Monday evening. The Vice-president (Mr L. Packer) occupied the chair. The evening being devoted to the portfolio, the following papers were read :— " Giving a Guarantee," " Unemployed/' "National Songs," "Township of Eeefton," "Tobacco" (2), •Women of the Present Day," and * Government Interference."

The usual weekly meeting of the North Lobnrn Mutual Improvement Society was /held on Saturday evening. There was a large attendance, Mr J. Criglington presiding.. The subject for discussion was "Women's Franchise." .. Mies M. Joyce opened in the affirmative, and Mr T. White in the negative ; and at the close of a well-contested debate the meeting declared in favour of women's franchise.

The usual weekly meeting of the Sb Paul's Presbyterian Mutual improvement Society, Kaiapoi, was held on Monday, when there was a large attendance. The President (Bev W. J. Gow) occupied the chair. The evening was devoted to "A Nioht wi' Bnrns," an address being given by Mr T. Millar, and songs, &c, being contributed by Mrs Hume, Misses Young (2), M'Borie (2), Messrs Tetnpleton, Gow, M'Borie, Hoskin and G. Millar ; Miss Ellen presided at the piano.

The weekly meeting of the Springfield Mntual Improvement Society was held on Saturday. There was a large attendance, and in the absence of the President, Mr Naiamith occupied the chair. The "Journal," containing the usual assortment of papers and correspondence, was read and well received. The Rev Hamilton gave a lecture on "Naiemith, the Engineer." Great interest was taken in the subject, and the lecturer was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. - Three new members were elected and one nominated for membership.
