• I The ordinary general meeting was held on Saturday, at the rooms of the Y.M.0.A., the President in the chair. Fonr new members were elected. The following resolution was passed :— ' That'tbia Institute is not at present prepared to give an opinion regard- . ing the formation of an Anti-Chineae ; League/* Letters were received from the _ Auckland Women's Political League, accepting federation, and from* the Wan* j ganui Political League, stating that it j would accept federation on Btriotly non? | party lines. It was left to the Secretary j to' explain to the latter society that the Institute had always been against party government. The Dunedin women's platform of federation was agreed to. The delegates to the Progressive Liberal j Association reported that that society < would consider the petitions at their next ; committee meeting. The Secretary^ read a letter from Mrs Sheppard, who is at present in England, on the subject of federation with- the International Council j of Women. The following resolution was passed:— "That this Institute is in favour of federation with the International Counoil of Women." The sentences passed at the recent sittings of the Chrißtchurch Supreme Court were disoussed. The following resolution was passed:— "That this Institute protests against the lightness of the sentences recently passed in Christchuroh on the criminals convicted of assault." Before taking any further active steps in the matter, several ladies were deputed to obtain the evidence of the case and report at the next meeting.
