Anti-Chinese League.

A meeting of delegates from various ■societies was held at the Temperance Hall, Gloucester Street, last evening for the purpose of forming an Anti-Chinese League. The following Associations were represented :— Canterbury, Ballance and St Albans Liberal Atsociations, Fruiterers' and Market Gardeners' Associations, Bailway Servants' Society, New Zealand Workers' Union, Christchuroh Womon'a Political Association, Women's Institute and Women's Section of the Canterbury Liberal Association. There was an attendance of eighteen. Mr W. W. Collins, M.H.8., was voted to the chair, and explained the object of the meeting. It was resolved— "That a League be formed, to be known hb the Anti-Chinese League." Those present agreed to join the League, the subscription to which was fixed at ls per annum. Officers were then elected aB under :— President, Mr W. W. Collins, M.H.8.; vice-presidents, Messrs J. T. M. Hornsby and A. Cumming ; secretary, Mr C. Scholfield ; treasurer, Mr P. Taylor. Tho objects of the League were adopted to the following effect: — To educate publio opinion to assist in all social movements and support all legislative efforts in the direction of restricting Chinese and other undesirable competitors in the colonies' labour markets ; by raising ths poll tax on Chinese to at least £100; by enforcing tbe inspection of premises occupied by Chinese and other Asiatics ; by absolutely prohibiting the naturalisation of any Chinese or other Asiatics ,* by urging the Government to refuse mail subsidies to any steamer or other vessel carrying as whole or part of the crew any Asiatic, Lascar or Kanaka; by members pledging themselves and inducing others not to deal with any Asiatic grower or vendor of any marketable products, or with any European retailer who supplies such products, or with any trader who sells or causes to be sold any goode — except such as could not be made by onr own workersmanufactured or produced by Chinese and other allied races. The executive was instructed to draft a code of rnles, and it was resolved to have the objocts of the League printed and circulated.
