ELLESMERE TROTTING CLUB.

The inaugural meeting of the Ellesmere Trotting Club was heM no Saturday on the grass track laid out by Mr W. Spring in the paddook recpntly acquired by him as a reoreatiou ground for the district, opposite the Leeston Hotel. The track,, which is nearly one-third of a mile in circumference, had not been used previous to this meeting, and was rather soft and in places rough and slippery, but it improved aa the afternoon woa^t on, and will be a good trotting track. There waa a fair attendance, itsclurtin.'.; ". numbor of the *' cash-fielding" fraternity from Christchurch — tbemesting being run without the tofcalisator. There ws3 very little betting, and that in small sums. A fair afternoon's ep rt waa provided, although the handicappers found it impossible to equalise the chances of the trained and the untrained horace, and the former had matters pretty isaoh their own way. Maud V. was protested against for inconsistent running in the Ellesmere Handicap and the last event, but the protect was dismissed.
