The following applications were therefore adjourned until June 24, at noon:— P. Upon the application of Thomas Popham for a renewal of the license for .Coker's Hotel, Manchester Street, being called

Mr Bruges eaid he appeared for the applicant, Mr T. S. Weaton said Mr G. Ritchie and himself appeared for all those who had signed a petition against a renewal of the license being granted, with the exception of the Eev F. W. Isitt and Mr T. E. Taylor. Mr Bruges asked for an adjournment, as the charges made against the conduct of the house in the petition were of bo general a nature that the applicant did not know what he had to meet. ..... Mr Weston objected to an adjourn* ment. • , :; . ■■"■.' ■ : ;• ■ : ■'■'- "■■•■ '- •■■■'•

The Chairman then read the petition. He said that what the committee proposed to do was to hear prima facie evidence in support of the petition. Mr Bruges wished .the petitioners to make the charges more specific ; at present they were in too general language. Mr Weston said a further notice of objection Had been served upon the applicant. Mr Bishop said it was open to the objectors to make general charges, and to afterwards Bupporc them in any way they thought fit. The general conduct of the house was called in question by the petitioners. If they were able to prove anything like some of their statements, the allegations if substantiated would form charges under the Police Offences Act, and would have to be dealt with by another Court. Until some evidence had been heard the committee was not in a position to express an opinion -as --to whether the case was one for it to deal with, or whether it was one which. came within the jurisdiction of the Magistrate's Court. If specific allegations were made, he thought the applicant should have an opportunity of meeting them in another place. Mr Bruges said the chargeß might extend over a series of years*Mr Bishop aaid he would not allow any charges to be brought before the committee which did not deal with the license held under the present committee. Mr Weston having aßked what mode of procedure would be adopted if the case were adjourned. The Chairman said that the proper course would be for Mr Weston to produce any evidence in Bupport of the petition, and then Sir Bruges could call rebutting evidence, and aleo evidence as to the general conduct of the house during the past year. Mr Weston then said he would agree to the postponement, and the application was adjonrned until June 24, at 10 a.m.
