Arrangements have almost been completed, for leasing the Government steamer Stella to the Auckland Trading Company for the Island trade. She haa been lying in the harbour for years, and has twine been offered by auction without success. The position with regard to Mr M'Ewan, the dairy expert, is that his term of leave from the Canadian Government has expired. He was willing to accept a permanent engagement here, but the Government could not see its way to pay. the salary asked. He j therefore returns to Canada, and the Minister of Agriculture has oabled to the Hon J. G. Ward to engage, an expert in Canada on terms approved by the Government. The Hon J. G. Ward leaves London: on | Saturday by way of Canada, and is expected to arrive here on July 7. If the Warrimoo does not touch at New Zealand he will come on by the TJpolu. • ■ ■ '. The Government has ordered three thousand more Martini-Henri rifles and carbines, which will probably arrive in three or four months. ' The whole of the defence forces will then be armed with the same weapon. Plans have been approved and arrangements made for the construction of a cable Bteamer in London at a cost of £16,000. It will be on similar lines to the Union Steamship Company's Wainui, with a draught of ten feet light and thirteen feet loaded. The vessel will arrive here about twelve months hence. ' DUNEDIN, May 29. - Requiem mass was celebrated at St Joseph's Cathedral this morning, when there was an immense congregation. Archbishop Redwood delivered an eloquent Bermon on the life of Bishop Moran. The weather is fine, and the funeral promises to be one of the largest ever seen in Dunedin, The Perpetual Trustees Association declare 12£ per cent dividend for the year and carry forward £1857 5s id.
