At the Stipendiary Magistrates' Court yesterday, Broun and Co., sawmillerß, were fined £25 and costs, for having on five occasions made wilful misstatements of the quantity of. timber loaded on railway trucks.

The expenditure during the financial year by the Lands and Survey Department out of the Publio Works Fund under the Lands Improvement and Native Land Purchase Acts, was £193,694, with liabilities of .£193,295. Of the latter £131,378 U on the Lands Improvement Act.

Mr Armstrong, the defendant, was, consequently, fined in a nominal penalty. Notice of appeal was at once lodged. Mr Abraham Myera was fined 10s and costs in each of two cases for failing to give the employes in his factory a halfholiday.
